Construction started on the long-awaited Pudong Art Museum on Sept 26, which is anticipated to become a new cultural landmark for Shanghai.
The museum is located in Lujiazui's core area, surrounded by popular scenic spots such as the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Super Brand Mall, and Binjiang Park.
Situated on an area of 1.29 hectares, its main building is designed to stand 30 meters tall with four levels.
To ensure it will be worthy of the title of a landmark, a global call to top architectural designers was made to solicit the best possible design. Eventually, Jean Nouvel, a famed French architect who has designed Philharmonie de Paris and the National Art Museum of China, won the competition.
According to Jean Nouvel's design, the surface of the building will be covered with white granite plate inscribed with raindrop-shaped patterns on its surface, symbolizing gifts from heaven in traditional Chinese culture.
The western side of the building will have a six-meter high and a 12-meter high double glass curtain wall. Using advanced technology, this space is expected to give more possibilities for set designers and artists to create their own spaces.
The museum is built for multiple purposes including artwork exhibitions, art education, academic research, cultural exchange and tourism.
After its completion, it is set to be a cultural venue showing a combination of traditional and modern arts. Various traditional and modern art exhibitions are already planned to be held in the museum.
The establishment of this new art museum is an important part of Pudong's efforts to improve local cultural facilities. Five other cultural projects – the east branch of the Shanghai Library, the east branch of Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Opera House, Pudong Public Art Center, and Pudong Youth Cultural Center – will also start construction soon.
